FAQs

What is Compassionate Nomad?

Compassionate Nomad is a purpose-driven movement that combines travel with giving back. We connect travellers, expatriates, and friends of Sri Lanka with meaningful opportunities to support communities through knowledge-sharing, skills, resources, and financial contributions.

Who can join Compassionate Nomad?

Anyone! Whether you are a Sri Lankan expatriate, a foreign visitor, or already living in Sri Lanka, you can get involved. All that’s needed is a willingness to contribute.

How does it work?
  1. Plan Your Trip — Let us know when and where you’d like to travel in Sri Lanka.
  2. Match Your Skills — Share your background and interests so we can connect you with the right project.
  3. Make a Difference — Contribute your skills, time, or resources to create real impact while experiencing authentic Sri Lanka.
Can I contribute without traveling?

Yes! We also offer remote volunteering opportunities. You can mentor, train, or support organizations in Sri Lanka via Zoom or other online platforms.

What kind of volunteer work can I get involved in?

We partner with organizations and communities across a wide range of areas, including:

  • Education and training
  • Mental health and well-being
  • Childcare, elder care, and orphanage support
  • Environmental sustainability
  • Technology and digital transformation
  • Community empowerment and social causes
  • Fundraising and resource mobilization
  • Conservation and animal care etc.
Do I need specific skills to participate?

Not at all. Every contribution counts whether you’re a professional sharing your expertise, a student offering your time, or someone who simply wants to support with resources.

Is there a cost to join?

No. Compassionate Nomad does not charge participants. However, if you’re traveling to Sri Lanka, you will need to cover your own travel, visa, and accommodation expenses.

How are volunteers matched with projects?

We match you based on your skills, interests, and availability, ensuring you are connected with the most suitable organization, project, or community in Sri Lanka.

How far in advance should I apply?

We recommend applying as soon as you know when and where you’d like to volunteer. This helps us secure your placement in the program of your choice.

Do I need a visa or background check to volunteer?

Yes. Obtaining the appropriate Sri Lankan visa is the responsibility of each volunteer and will depend on the length and purpose of your stay.
For certain projects, especially those involving schools, childcare centres, orphanages, or elder care facilities - a criminal background check may also be required to protect vulnerable groups. We will guide you on specific requirements once you are matched with a project.
